ALISON ROSS ~ RIP
It was with great sadness that I learnt of Alisons passing during the last week of March 2020. Alison was a long-standing member of Dollar Ladies Golf Club, having joined in 1980. She was a great supporter both on and off the course. In 1995 she was Lady Captain, a role she carried out with enthusiasm, efficiency and with always a gracious smile. She always enjoyed our annual outings to the various clubs over the years and in 2011 I was delighted to win the Crystal Greensomes with her.
~ We will all remember her for her smile and her kindness ~

Joan Lawrence MBE ~ 1930-2020
Joan Lawrence MBE, a legend of Scottish women's golf, has died just a few weeks short of her 90th birthday. She was a keen supporter of Dollar Ladies Golf Club and was guest speaker at the Dollar Ladies Centenary Dinner. She won the Dollarbeg Trophy five times between 1972 and 1981. She won the Fife Ladies Championship eighteen times and played for Great Britain and Ireland in the Curtis Cup. Off the course she also served golf as Chairperson of the LGU and President of the SLGA. The golf world and Dollar will miss her.

Memory Lane ~ Just one more time!
Saturday 7th December 2019
It was a round down memory lane and the chance to play the course the final time before Dollar Golf Club is no more for the three guests of Dollar member Moragh Dunning. Former member Alison Houston was the Lady Captain in 2005, she was winner of the Dollarbeg Ladies Open in 2005, 2006, 2006 and 2008 as well as winning the Ladies Club Championship in 1995, 2003, 2005 and 2006. Frances Robertson was also a member for many years winning the Dollarbeg in 2003. She was also Ladies Club Champion in 1993, 1994, 1998, and 1999. Lindsay (sister of Frances) although not a member at Dollar knew the course well, having played in many invitation matches and Open Competitions. Between the four of them there is a trophy cabinet of 14 club championships - Not bad going! Moragh expressed her pleasure at playing with them again albeit sad, she said, that it was the last time they would all play together again at Dollar.

Stableford:
1st: Helen Wilson & Sarah Parker (28) - Drumpellier - 32 points

There was a good turnout for this annual autumnal challenge over the slopes with many plyers new to the course this year. Acceptable autumnal weather, breezy for the later starters but the play was of a high standard and closely contested with the "better inner half" needed to separate the leading scores.

Closing Meeting 2019
The Ladies Closing Meeting 2019 was held on Sunday 13th October and included the Captain's Day event with the added charity this year in aid of the Red Cross. The weather was generally good and fairly mild although recent rain had left the course quite soggy in places. There was a good turn-out and Joanna Bridges (pictured on the right of Ladies Captain Elaine Williamson) emerged as the overall winner in what proved to be a most enjoyable and pleasant social occasion enhanced greatly by the raising of 150 for the Red Cross.

Campsie Visit - 29th August 2019
This year the annual visit with the Campsie Ladies took place at Dollar on Thursday 29 August. In rather wet conditions teams of three competed in a Texas scramble. Despite the weather the golf was of a high standard and played in good spirit.
All those taking part are pictured above and on the left, Christine, Nancy and Morag (Campsie) - the winning team.
A wonderful supper provided by the Dollar ladies followed and it was an occasion enjoyed by all.

Solheim Cup Event - 27th August 2019
On Tuesday 27 August, Saline Golf Club invited five members from each of Dollar, Canmore and Muckhart to join them for a nine-hole competition. The format of one member from each club playing together in a team made it an evening of friendship and fun. A supper of soup and sandwiches afterwards was warmly welcomed. The Solheim Cup" was presented to the winning team and the picture above shows all those taking part..

Ladies Club Outing - 26th August 2019
The Dollar Ladies outing this year was to Canmore golf club, Dunfermline. Due to flooding the original date was cancelled and the second time of trying, Monday August 26th, turned out to be a beautiful summer's day.
Captain Elaine had organised the teams and the prizes for the winners! Twelve Ladies made the event and in the ideal conditions it proved an enjoyable visit, both playing the course and the splendid meal in the clubhouse afterwards.
Well done to the winning team of Nancy Cumming, Ashley Leitch and Kate Brodie - pictured right with with Captain Elaine Williamson.

Bronze Friendly League - 23rd August 2019
This year the Bronze League teams of Dollar, Tillicoultry and Falkirk Carmuirs met at Dollar and instead of playing matches against each other throughout the summer with an end of season dinner the event was played as a 12 holes greensome Stableford. There was some fine golf played over a course in good condition and a cold buffet meal to follow made for an excellent social occasion. For the record it was a home win for Dollar. The event will be repeated next year with Falkirk acting as hosts.

INTER CLUB PAIRS - AUGUST 2019
The annual Inter Club Pairs competition was held at Tillicoultry this year on Thursday 15th August. The weather was kind and the course was good but a little soggy in places. The Dollar team, seeking to retain the trophy won last year, consisted of Moragh Dunning, Margaret Stephenson, Maria Symington, Janette McMillan, Carol Caren and Di Dunning with the best two scores from the three pairs counting. Overall the golf was of a high standard, the competition keen, the final scores close and there followed a pleasant evening. The final result: 1st Braehead 146; 2nd Tillicoultry 151.5; 3rd Dollar 152.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2019 |
ASHLEY ~ 2019 LADIES CHAMPION
it was Ashley Leitch (left) and Elan Borrowman who won through from the preliminary rounds to contest the final on Sunday 7th July. Both with near 30 years membership and service to the Club it was a close match from start to finish in ideal golfing conditions - pleasant weather and a well prepared course. Elan produced some superb shots but found trouble at a few crucial holes and it was the steady play by Ashley that prevailed to win on the last hole.
The Handicap Championship was between Margaret Stephenson and last year's winner Carol Caren and it proved to be another close game. Margaret was strong off the tee, Carol countered well with her approach shots but with the handicap allowance couldn't quite make up the difference and Margaret sealed the title with a monster putt across the green on the 17th.

TRI-AM ~ SATURDAY 11th MAY 2019
Sunny, dry and ideal golfing conditions to welcome a good field for the ladies in the annual Open Tri-Am. The course was in excellent conditions and the golf of a high standard in this unusual format - at sixteen of the holes only one score counts but at the other two all three scores are required.
Topping the leaderboard were Barbara Pratt, Barbara Malcolm and Olive O'Sullivan (below) who took the honours with a fine score of 81, in second place with 82 and the better inner half were Catherine Macdonald, Catherine Brodie and Sarah Herdman from third placed Tricia Chillas, Judy Farrell and Shelagh Quinn also carding 82. A good day of good weather, good golf and good company.

Opening Meeting - 6th April 2019
Despite the rain and a bitter east wind the Dollar Ladies turned out in force to start off the season with a fun game of golf. It was the team of Captain, Elaine Williamson, versus that of V/Captain, Catherine Macdonald, and by way of variety, a tennis racket and tennis ball was used at the infamous 2nd hole - all to no avail! However, overall it proved a close match with the Captain's team taking the honours by 2 points and congratulations to Moragh Dunning for the 'longest drive' and Joanna Bridges for 'nearest the pin'.

GUESTS FOR LUNCH
|
It was on Wednesday 15th August 2018 that two ladies from the Czech Republic, a mother with her daughter, who had been playing in the under-23 Open International competition at St Andrews, were sightseeing in Dollar. Seeing the sign to the Golf Club, they came to look at the course and the clubhouse where they encountered Moragh Dunning who invited them to join the Ladies Wednesday lunch. They were pleased to accept and their company made for an interesting and enjoyable lunchtime break for all.

HONORARY MEMBERSHIP FOR CHRISTINE
|
Dollar Ladies Golf Club - 4th December 2017
Pictured above Lady Captain Elan Borrowman (on the left) presents Christine Malcolm with the Certificate of "Honorary Life Membership" of Dollar Ladies Golf Club. Christine is a staunch supporter of the Ladies and the overall club. She is by far the longest serving member having joined as a Junior on the 3rd January 1948, 70 years - who can beat it? As well as a regular competitor with more than a few trophies she has been active in club management and, in recent years, a valued assistant looking after the Juniors. She was also instrumental in the setting up of the popular Calcutta Cup which competition has origins in her family's golfing life and it was her mother who donated the Mary Wiliamson Cup. Congratulations Christine and may you continue to enjoy your golf at Dollar.

1896 THE CONCERNS OF THE LADY GOLFERS ...
On 6 June 1896 Mrs Alice P Gibson, Hon. Treasurer of Dollar Ladies Golf Club, wrote to Mr Willie Park of Musselburgh seeking his advice. The letter enquired whether it was permissible for the Lady Members to have gentlemen friends acting as caddies.
Mr Park (pictured left) drafted his reply on the back of Mrs Gibsons letter and stated that it was quite usual" for a gentleman to carry a ladys clubs and to coach her in a competition.
In the postscript of her letter it is noted that Mrs Gibson stated that she had been purchasing clubs from Mr Park for the Dollar Ladies Golf Club for four years. Could this be the earliest reference to the Ladies Club?
Mr Willie Park Jnr was Open Champion at Prestwick in 1887 and Musselburgh in 1889. Both he and his father were from golfs leading family of the 19th century and thanks are due to Mr Mungo Park of Gloucestershire who forwarded a copy of this letter to Dollar. He had found it in the proof copy of the second edition of The Game of Golf written by his great uncle - Willie Park Jnr.

Course Review - a Lady's Perspective
It was a lady who, in 1906, drove off at Dollar to open the first eighteen-hole course in Clackmannanshire. She was the Countess of Mar and Kellie (right) and although long since changed it remains typical of a traditional Scottish village golf course. Presenting an interesting and varied challenge it is hardly long in yards or in time to complete ideal for the modern lady with her many responsibilities. The complete absence of bunkers and the removal of the short rough between adjoining fairways are factors which saw the SLGA reduce the standard scratch in 2005 to 67, one below the par of 68. However, as a hillside course there is the variety of slopes to contend with, a burn features on some seven holes and although at 71 yards the second is the shortest hole on the course the approach is near vertical! The other four par three holes, however, are relatively long and good tee shots are required to find the greens but this is more than balanced by the fact that reaching the par four holes in regulation is well within the range of the average player. The one and only par five takes the player along the highest part of the course where the views are spectacular, enjoy them and relax in the knowledge then that its all down hill to a warm welcome in the Clubhouse.
